The Ethics of Sharing Videos Without Permission

Recently, Kusal R Dissanayake, in collaboration with the LK Domain Registry, recorded a session at ITN Digital on the topic of how to use social media responsibly. With over 8 million users from all age groups and genders engaging online, his discussion emphasized the importance of privacy, ethical content sharing, and online security. While social media is a powerful tool, it also comes with risks—especially when it comes to publishing content without consent.

Privacy and Social Media: What to Avoid

🔹 Never share personal details (phone numbers, addresses, financial data).
🔹 Avoid posting others' content (videos, photos) without consent.
🔹 Be cautious with real-time location sharing for security reasons.
🔹 Do not spread fake news or manipulated content (deepfakes, misinformation).

Publishing Videos Without Consent: Is It Legal?

Recording and sharing a video of someone without permission can lead to privacy violations and legal consequences. It is especially risky if:
✅ The video was recorded in a private setting (workplace, home, school).
✅ The person did not give explicit consent.
✅ The content is used to embarrass, defame, or harm reputation.

How to Publish Responsibly

✔️ Always ask for consent before recording or sharing someone’s video.
✔️ If publishing workplace-related content, ensure it aligns with company policies.
✔️ Avoid posting videos of minors or confidential discussions without legal approval.
✔️ If a person requests content removal, respect their privacy rights.

What to Do If Your Video Is Shared Without Consent?

🔹 Report it to the platform (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) for removal.
🔹 Contact the uploader and request a takedown.
🔹 File a complaint under cybercrime or privacy laws if needed.

As Kusal R Dissanayake emphasized in their ITN Digital session, social media users must practice ethical content sharing to maintain a safe and respectful online environment.
